The University of Miami has approved construction of a 144-bed, $460-million hospital and medical center on the campus shared by its medical school and Jackson Memorial Hospital.

Construction is scheduled to begin early next year with completion in 2010. University officials say the facility will help it compete with the nation's top medical schools for star doctors.

Some healthcare officials worry that the private facility will siphon off the insured and private-pay patients who provide a key revenue stream for the county's Jackson Memorial Hospital.
